Uganda Maternal Health Project: Allocated Chapters

FIRST MONTH- Alice

1. DIZZINESS

A woman standing in the garden holding a hoe with circles showing dizziness around her head. Her eyes are squinted, her hand on the head and the other holding the hoe.  Two older women can be seen in the background one digging and the other collecting grass. A baby sits in the tiled land playing in it.

2. FOOD AVERSIONS

A woman sitting on a mat with her face frowned while looking at a plate of food she has been offered by another woman. A group of three people can be seen seated nearby happily eating the same food.

3. FATIGUE

A woman is seated bent on a chair. Her limbs are swaying without any sign of motion. (I would like an artists’ input on this because I cannot fully explain how to display fatigue.)

4. CONSTIPATION

A woman squatting on a pit latrine, its constructed from mud and is grass thatched, the door is open. Her face is frowned in pain. Her arms are folded in fists and a sweat can be seen dripping on the side of her face.  It is clear that she is having constipation.

5. SWOLLEN BREASTS

A woman is going to be drawn having different breast sizes. The breast sizes will be enlarging as she progresses through the nine months. The smallest will be in the first month and the biggest depicted in the ninth month.

6. VOMITING

A woman can be seen outside in the corner of a house vomiting uncontrollably. The clothes are still flying in motion because of the speed she used to rush out of the house. An elderly woman can be seen standing smiling in the door way at the young woman doing all the vomiting. Scenery includes flowers and grass in the compound, smoke coming out of the kitchen which is distant.

7. BLEEDING

A woman can be seen wearing clothes stained with blood. She is walking through the market while looking behind on her stained dress around the buttock with confusion on her face. One of her arms is stretching the dress for a clearer look while the other holds a bag with some groceries hanging out. People like women and men on their market stalls are seen continuing with their business. One of the women selling tomatoes looks at her while her neighbor selling cabbage attends to a customer. Other people can be seen faintly in the background.

8. INCREASED URINATION

A woman can be seen entering a pit latrine but with the word urinal multiple times. The same picture will be repeated four times but each having a clock showing intervals of 20 minutes. If the first clock is to show 12:15, the image that flows will be having 12:35, followed by 12:55 and so on. She can be seen rushing to the toilet with one of her hands holding her private parts as if trying to stop the urine from coming through. The clothes are swaying in the air as she rushes. The scenery is made up of trees and grass but with a clear path to the urinal.

RECOMMENDATION

9. DRINKING WATER

A woman can be seen sitting outside of a kitchen sitting on a mat. She is taking a glass of water. A jug of water covered with a net seated on a plate is nearby. She is talking to a younger girls seated in the door way of the kitchen. Smoke is coming out of the kitchen. Ducks and chickens can be around picking and walking with chicks. A garden can be seen fading into the distance.

10. TAKING ICE

A woman can be seen sitting in the living room watching television. It has old furniture with a basket in one corner of the room. She is sucking on an ice cube taken from a plate she has placed on the table in front of her containing more ice cubes. A child is also sitting close by on the floor watching TV too.

11. FOODS CONTAINING GINGER

A woman can be seen preparing food with raw ginger being placed on a small plate, a spice bottle with the word ginger on it.  A young boy sits nearby drinking a cup of tea in a  mug while holding ginger in his hand.

THINGS TO AVOID

12. SMOKING

A man holds a holds one cigarette in his mouth, smoke can be seen coming from one side of his mouth. His other hand holds a packet of cigarettes. A pregnant woman sits kneading next to him and smoke from the cigarette can be seen going in her direction showing that she is smoking indirectly. They are sitting in the living room and some few objects like a table and faint wall paintings can be seen.  A big X can be put on this scene.

13. X-RAY

A pregnant woman can be seen opening the door to the x-ray room. The word X-RAY ROOM is seen on the door she is opening. Other patients can be seen seated waiting nearby to go into the x-ray room too.  A big X can be put below each this drawing.

14. ALCOHOL

A pregnant woman can be seen in a bar with some friends drinking a beer from a bottle. Her friends are sipping from glasses, the bar attendant can be seen looking at the pregnant woman from across the counter surprised. A big X can be put on this scene.

SECOND MONTH – Alice

15. DARK PATCHES/ SPOTS ON THE FACE

A pregnant woman’s face can be drawn having dark patches or spots on her face. The same woman can be drawn with a dark line on her face running from the forehead through the nose and mouth. Only the face needs to be drawn. This can be portrayed by a woman looking at her face in the mirror. It’s the mirror image that the dark features are shown. These should not be outstandingly darker.

16. STRETCH MARKS

Some stretch marks can be seen on the belly of the woman in this month. She is wearing a long skirt holding her blouse up to the level of her breasts which are thus covered and not showing. She is pointing out the stretch marks to her friend who is also pregnant. It is a bed room scene thus a bed which is unlaid can be seen in the background with a big basket with clothes toppling over can be seen in one corner.

17. SNORING

A pregnant woman can be seen sleeping with her mouth open snoring. Her husband lays in bed awake holding a pillow to his ears. He is looking at her with eyes wide open in disbelief. It’s a bedroom scene. The windows with curtains half drawn can be scene and a clock showing 3:45 in the night. It’s dark outside.

18. NOSE BLEEDING

A pregnant woman can be seen with her nose bleeding. She is slightly bent to prevent the blood from falling on her clothes though some small stains of blood can be seen on her clothes in the chest areas. Her husband is seen rushing towards her with a cloth which he holds in one hand he stretches towards her. They are out on the road. Their house can be seen faintly in the back ground.

19. GUM BLEEDING

A pregnant woman can be seen brushing her teeth but with blood coming out of her gums. She is brushing from outside the house. Blood can be seen in her sputum too which is a mixture of blood and foam from the brushing. She holds a cup of water in one hand and the other holds the tooth brush which has long protruding tips, with some bent sideways away from the others.

20. BACKACHES

A pregnant woman can be seen holding her back in agony while trying to continue walking. Her face is frowned in pain a school girl can be seen standing opposite the road looking at her with emptiness on her face. It’s a road scene.

RECOMMENDATION

21. BRA FOR SUPPORT

 A woman can be seen in the market holding a big bra which can accommodate her growing breasts. While she checks out the bra, her companion an elderly woman can be seen picking another bra from the stock while talking to the attendant. It’s an open market scene with other vendors going about their business.

22. SUNSCREEN

A pregnant woman can be seen walking with a group of women. She is wearing a large hat that protects her from direct sunlight. Another pregnant woman in the group holds an umbrella to protect herself from the sun. They are chatting and walking on the road side. It’s a road scene with cars approaching and a bicycle fading in the distance.

23. MASSAGE

A pregnant woman be seen lying on the bed with her husband massaging her shoulders. She is smiling and fully clothed. The husband is seen talking to her while holding the hand he is massaging up. It’s a bedroom scene with the bed and clothes in the basket showing.

24. WARM BATH

A pregnant woman can be seen in the in the bathroom wrapped in a towel with a basin containing warm water. Some steam is coming from the basin which is on the floor. A sponge and soap are held by the woman in the hands.

25. VISITING DOCTOR

A pregnant woman together with her husband can be seen walking towards a health center. The nurse is standing at the door holding a tray with some faintly seen materials. Some patients are sitting outside. The word HEALTH CENTER is seen on the building with the doctor’s office windows open. The woman is holding hands with her husband as they approach the building.

SIXTH MONTH – Alice

43. ABDOMINAL PAIN

A pregnant woman can be seen holding her belly in pain. Her face is irritated. Her husband is with her trying to hold her arm. Her knees are bent and he tries to support her. It’s a road scene.

44. ITCHY TUMMY

 A pregnant woman can be seen scratching away at her itching belly. She is wearing clothes but the scratching movements can be seen since she is using move arms to do so. Another woman is seated besides her sawing. They are seated outside the house, a goat can be seen fading away in the distance.

RECOMMENDATION

45. PHYSIOTHERAPY

A pregnant woman can be seen doing different physiotherapy (kegel) exercises and some yoga. The same woman can be drawn showing different exercise positions.

46. VISIT TO THE DOCTOR

A husband and wife can be seen seated on chairs being addressed by the doctor. They are holding hands and smiling. The doctor in his lab coat and stethoscope around the neck, seats cross legged and talks to the happy couple.

SEVENTH MONTH – Alice

47. INCREASED SPITTING

A pregnant woman can be seen spitting in a bush while another sneezes into a hanky.  These can be drawn as independent pictures or together as one.

48. BLEEDING

A woman can be seen with a big blood stain on the back of her skirt in the bum area. Another woman is seen hurrying towards her with a wrapper while another tries to support her. The blood is much and also be seen on the ground. These women are all heading towards the health center which can be seen in the distance. The women are near a poster which shows that there is a health center having an arrow pointing in the direction of the center.

RECOMMENDATION

WHAT TO HAVE

49.  A packet of sanitary pads can be drawn here with one or two of the sanitary towels showing on the ground next to the packet.

A wrapper cloth in form of a bed sheet but smaller or large enough to  for woman to wrap around herself can be drawn here too to encourage woman carry an extra piece of clothe in case of bleeding.
