Q&A Saturday; Making of the Illustrations

My original mixed media illustration in my sketchbook. Photographed via Iphone.

Edit of the above photograph. I added colours and tried to make the jewels on the forehead look more life like with highlights and shadows. I think this is better than the top one but I don't think the photograph quality is professional enough. In future I would like to scan it in in order to have a whiter space as the background and more definition on the features.

The Book of Symbols, Reflections on Archetypal Images; TASCHEN

"Whale is the spirit of the Deep, the creature that mirrors its incomparable size and swallow - as ocean, unconscious, memory, night, womb and underworld. Sometimes, glimpsing in the distance white pearls of briny exhalation, the breaching head and dark flukes, we have thought of the cosmos (be)coming out of the primeval waters. In a constellation of silvery stars in the dark abyss of space we have discerned the swimming shape of Cetus, the Whale, whose astral eye feels like the eye of an intelligence within ourselves that is more than the ego."

"Our ancestors called the whale "dragon", "sea monster", and giant "fish", projections that carried innate fears of how easily existence and reason are swallowed.
In the myth of the Night Sea Journey, the solar hero trapped in the "belly of the whale" harrows hell and overcomes death by finding a way out. With the help of a god of culture he is disgorged, or cuts away the heart of the whale or sets a fire, images of human consciousness severing connection with the matrix of nature.
Tikigaq Inuit whalers portrayed the soul of primal woman and primal whale as one; her igloo was a "whale," its passage of reassembled whalebones an "area of birth, death, danger and initiation"; in some stories "woman and whale are one and the same victim" (Lowenstein, 39). When the men hunted the bow-head whale, their wives remained inert and passive in a form of shamanic male-female magic with which to lure the whale into passively surrendering itself so that its death might reanimate igloo, community and landscape (Lowenstein, 37ff). The Hebrew "Leviathan" at first meant an attribute of the Creator and may have literally referred to the great crocodile, but the word symbollically came to represent an adversary of immense proportions and devilish ferocity, an image adopted and amplified by whalers...
"All the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified... in Moby Dick. He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down..." wrote Melville in his famous novel."

UPDATE: BRIEF: VAGINA DENTATA Magazine

Vagina Dentata Magazine description:

"Despite surveys frequently proving that female audience makes up 40-60% of science fiction film/television viewers, the gender is so rarely catered to, respectfully presented or even featured within the SF genre. Vagina Dentata Zine comments on the current pertinence of Xenofeminism, the integration of cyborgian elements into the everyday, SF references pervading the runway for the last two seasons and as a counter-reaction to the normcore, minimalistic aesthetic of the current decade. As a reaction to the supposed “death of print” and the condescending tone that fashion media adopts, the zine community has flourished with their inclusive rather than exclusive written word, and embrace of niche community spaces rather than dictation. Zines like Polyester, Surface and Pitch have provided a colourful alternative to the history of the medium, whilst others have fully adopted the online format, I hope through research and exploration of concept I can build a new and innovative format for a zine, reinventing the term in my presentation of fantasy and sci-fi females, that reflects the present and the content of the product. Filling a space not yet catered to in the community, and building upon the origin of the zine as a byproduct of science fiction fandoms, I want to provide a colourful and comic take on SF and fashion"

Jasmines personal notes to me:

"Basically what I could really do with illustration wise would be some classic science fiction characters, probably Ellen Ripley, Barbarella, Princess Leia, and Wonder Woman. Shout if you'd prefer to draw anyone in particular or anything! Totally up to you! The style can be open as well, so whatever you're feeling, I love your digital work but I know that takes absolutely ages from personal experience :') So whatever you're comfortable with and if you have time! I know third year is manic! Let me know if you need any other details for your project or anything!"

Q&A Saturday: Robyn Shaw 10/10/15

This process actually took me a lot longer than I expected! Editing down the information and putting the questions in the best order for the viewer, creating an illustration, editing the drawing and ensuring it all looked right took me a lot of today! So I am definitely going to try and get the majority of it done by Friday, especially editing down the questions and answers into the right format! This way I can choose when best to upload it etc rather than being rushed! I think the evening is quite a good time though as most people are out during the day so will more likely be scrolling through social media at this time in the evening... however I wouldnt want it much later as people go out on Saturday nights, because of this, it is essential that I have the post prepared well in advance!

http://awaspinawig.tumblr.com/post/130895427045/101015-this-saturdays-qa-guest-is-the

I was inspired on the aesthetic for the illustration by Robyns love of monochrome, (I started off with grey paint and pencil), but I couldn't help adding colour, and since she has lovely auburn hair I decided to edit the original image with a warm tone of orange. I also found some inspiration on pinterest on my Sketchbook board with this image linked below...

UPDATE: 11/10/15

I decided to share the Tumblr post on my 'A Wasp in a Wig' Facebook page...

This morning Facebook notified me that this post was getting 75% more engagement than my other recent posts! This proves to me that doing the interviews is a great way to attract interest as it provides a human element and you get to find out a bit about someone as well as the industry their in... interviewing students like Robyn also allows people a sneak peak into degrees/uni life, which not many interviews do... this way people can find out about it from someone currently studying and with huge potential ahead of them - great for prospective students, people deciding whether uni is right for them, or even other students who are interested in where Robyn's at with her work and her thought processes for her future!

It's really good that Facebook has these statistics and I find them really useful in finding out what attracts attention and works best. I think this one worked well as I put my head in the mind frame of a typical magazine, so I used persuasive and intriguing language that might attract a bored FB browser! ...'Check out my interview with Fashion Communication student Robyn Shaw, and find out what she has to say about 'boys in vests'!'

Studio Brief 12: Guardian Editorial Brief

Here are a few of my edited (using Photoshop) illustrations for the Guardian brief representing LCA. As with the originals I wanted to keep the vibrant colours and the line work created by the crayola to show the expressive and spontaneous characteristics of LCA. However these works have beene altered in order to have a whiter background and to give them a cleaner cut appearance, cropping them a bit and giving them a small white border.

Studio Brief 10: Context

J U V E N I L E    I D I O P A T H I C
A R T H R I T I S
( J I A )

It is inflammation (swelling) of one or more of your joints. It first occurs before your 16th birthday.
JIA is slightly more common in girls. It most commonly occurs in pre-school age children or teenagers. There are different types of JIA and symptoms vary between the different types.  JIA may be difficult to control in some people, but most cases will be well controlled with treatment most of the time. If you have arthritis as part of another condition, it's often managed in a very similar way to JIA.

We don't completely understand what causes JIA. In fact, that's what ‘idiopathic’ means. JIA is an autoimmune disease. Your immune system is your body’s way of defending itself against injury, illness or bacteria. Your body can defend itself by causing inflammation or swelling. But when you have JIA, your body creates inflammation in a joint or joints when it doesn’t need to. This inflammation then causes stiffness and pain. JIA is thought to be due to a combination of genetic factors and trigger factors from the environment, for example the infections that your immune system has been in touch with. There’s no evidence that a specific infection causes JIA, but an infection may trigger your immune system's response that then carries on and affects your joints.

You'll be diagnosed with JIA if...
You've had arthritis for six weeks or more; your symptoms started before your 16th birthday; your doctor has ruled out other conditions that can cause arthritis.
Flare-ups of JIA (where symptoms get worse) can happen after: infections, periods of stress, changes in medication. But they can often happen for no apparent reason. Flare-ups can: reduce your appetite, reduce energy levels, and cause joint pain, swelling and stiffness. Sometimes you'll be able to manage the symptoms with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen for a few days or weeks. But if your symptoms are troubling you or they carry on you should contact your rheumatology team.

Stiff joints; your joints may feel stiffer after resting, for example first thing in the morning. To help with stiffness you should do some gentle activity. Swimming can be very good, especially in a warm pool. You might need to adapt this if you're having a flare-up.

Mood; JIA can affect sleep patterns. You may also feel fed up as a consequence of joint pains, frustrated at not being able to do everything you want to, or due to difficulties with medication. It's very important to share these concerns with the paediatric/adolescent rheumatology team.

Eye inflammation; between 10 and 20% of people with JIA will develop a potentially serious inflammatory eye condition called uveitis. As many as half of young people who develop uveitis could develop complications, such as cateracts or glaucoma, or need eye surgery. If it's left untreated, uveitis can potentially lead to sight loss. Uveitis can cause pain and redness in the eyes, but it can also develop without any noticeable symptoms. The type most associated with JIA, chronic anterior uveitis, doesn't cause any pain or redness. It's important to be screened by an eye specialist (opthalmologist) so that it doesn't go undetected. They'll check your sight and then carry out an exam with a bright light. The exam is painless. The treatment for uveitis is initially steroid drops. Drugs called methotrexate, tocilizumab and adalimumab can also be prescribed. Arthritis Research UK is funding studies which are looking at the effectiveness of these drugs in treating uveitis.

Puberty; JIA probably won't affect puberty, but sometimes arthritis or some medications (for example steroids) can make the changes of puberty happen later. In girls, periods can become irregular if arthritis is very active. Some of the medications, such as methotrexate, can have the same effect. If you're worried about how you look or about changes happening to your body, discussing this with your family, friends, your school nurse or rheumatology team can be helpful.

Growth; JIA probably won’t affect your growth, but sometimes having severe arthritis and/or being on steroid tablets can slow growth. If your growth is slower than normal for a time, it can often catch up later, especially when arthritis is well controlled. If active arthritis is left untreated in a joint, the growth of that joint can be affected. It’s important to get control of the arthritis before that happens.

Teeth; you may have trouble with your teeth if you have difficulty brushing, but also because of effects of medications. It's important to have regular dental check-ups. You may need orthodontic advice if arthritis has affected your jaw. You might find that an electric toothbrush is helpful. They can do some of the work for you to help make sure you clean your teeth thoroughly. If possible, ask for sugar-free drugs. If you take medications by mouth, brushing your teeth after is a good idea.

The aim of treatment for juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is to:
  • ·         Control the symptoms of arthritis
  • ·         Enable you to lead an active life at school or college
  • ·         Enable you to enjoy an active family and social life
  • ·         Help you become an independent adult.

It’s important to do all of these things but at the same time try to reduce any side-effects caused by the medicines.

Drugs for JIA; drugs can’t cure arthritis, but they can control the symptoms and help to reduce the possibility of joint damage. An increasing number of medicines are now available.
Painkillers (analgesics); these drugs help to control the pain of arthritis. Common painkillers include paracetamol, codeine or combinations e.g. co-codamol. They have to be taken regularly for maximum effect, which lasts hours not days. Side-effects include constipation, drowsiness and feeling a bit spaced-out.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); these often help to reduce pain, stiffness and swelling. Examples of the many NSAIDs include ibuprofen, piroxicam, naproxen and diclofenac. These have to be taken regularly to get maximum effect, which lasts hours not days. Side-effects include indigestion and other stomach problems. The risk of this happening can be reduced by always taking them with food. You should tell your doctor or rheumatology nurse specialist if you develop any stomach pains or cramps.

Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs); these drugs dampen down inflammation and can reduce the joint damage caused by arthritis. Methotrexate is the most commonly used DMARD in JIA. It can be given as a weekly dose by mouth or injection. Side-effects of methotrexate are rare, but you’ll need regular blood tests to check for them. These drugs are slow to become effective and you may not notice any benefit for several months.

Biological therapies; biological therapies is a name given to some newer drugs that have been available for about 10 years. Just like DMARDs, they slow down the progress of arthritis and reduce pain, swelling and stiffness. Like DMARDs they work by suppressing the immune system, and they’re called biological therapies because they were developed from research into the biology of arthritis. These drugs are used if you don’t respond to DMARDs such as methotrexate.
The main biological therapy used for JIA is etanercept, but others such as infliximab and adalimumab are now becoming more available for children and young people with the condition.

Steroids; these drugs control inflammation, pain and stiffness. They can be given as tablets, by injection into a joint or by a drip into a vein. A common treatment for young people is a steroid injection into the affected joint. Injections are very effective for many months, are very well tolerated and cause very few side-effects. In younger children these injections will be done under general anaesthetic, but as you get older these may be done under sedation, with gas and air (entonox) or awake with a local anaesthetic. In adult clinics, joint injections are always given with a local anaesthetic when you’re awake. Steroid tablets are used less for young people than steroid injections. Side-effects are more common with large doses and longer courses (over weeks and months). Short courses (for a few days or up to a week) or low doses tend to have few or no side-effects. Steroids should never be stopped suddenly (except if you’ve only been on them for under 2 weeks) as you can become very ill.

Eye drops; These will be used if you have eye inflammation. They’re used to reduce the inflammation, prevent the swollen iris from sticking to the lens and to reduce pressure inside the eye. Some of the medicines used for the arthritis, such as methotrexate and the biological therapies, can be used to treat eye inflammation if the eye drops alone aren’t enough.

Key points about drug treatments…

The risk of chickenpox – Chickenpox can be more severe if you’re taking steroids, methotrexate or biological therapies. If you haven’t had chickenpox (or aren’t sure) then tell your doctor or rheumatology nurse. They’ll give you advice on what to do if you get chickenpox or have been around someone with the condition. You may be able to have a vaccine.

Avoid certain vaccines – You must not have certain vaccines (live vaccines) if you’re taking methotrexate or biological therapies. These include vaccines against rubella (German measles) and BCG for tuberculosis (TB). However, most other vaccines are well tolerated and effective and it’s a good idea to have them. Check with your nurse or doctor.

Avoid drinking alcohol – Alcohol makes your liver more sensitive to the effect of methotrexate, which increases the risk of liver damage. You may be advised not to drink alcohol at all, but in truth many young people do drink some alcohol without apparent side-effects with their liver.

Use reliable contraception – If you’re taking drugs like methotrexate and are sexually active, it’s important that you use effective contraception. This drug can damage sperm in a man and eggs in a woman and may cause serious harm to the developing baby. If you want to have a baby or become a father in the future then methotrexate must be stopped at least 3 months beforehand. Discuss this with your doctor or nurse. If you do have unprotected sex then you should seek advice urgently from your nurse, GP or local sexual health clinic.

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy can:
  • ·         Help your arthritis.
  • ·         Relieve pain.
  • ·         Improve your ability to get on with life.
  • ·         Provide exercises to stretch soft tissues and build up muscles.
  • ·         Improve your heart and lung fitness.

Your physiotherapist and occupational therapist will assess you and will develop a programme for your individual needs so that you’re able to do the activities you want and need to be able to do in your daily life. They may give you exercises and coping strategies and sometimes they may provide equipment to make daily activities easier.

Pain relief; there are various ways to relieve pain, such as hot and cold pads, TENS, acupuncture, massage, hydrotherapy and relaxation. If your sleep is affected, it’s good to have a regular routine and some method of pain relief before bed.

Exercise; physiotherapists will help you with daily exercise by giving you a plan to follow that suits your needs. Your exercise plan will aim to make your muscles stronger and more flexible, which may help prevent damage to your joints and improve your movement. If you have a flare-up or a specific joint problem your physiotherapist will help you to improve or regain your strength.

Posture; A good upright posture is important to keep your body working efficiently. This means keeping the muscles strong enough to keep the back straight, with the shoulders relaxed but held back and the head up. This is particularly important when you’re sitting using a computer. Your therapists can give you tips to improve your posture and exercises to strengthen the ‘core’ of your body (the muscles of your stomach and back).

Splints and insoles; splints will help stabilise your joints and give support to allow you to keep going for longer periods. A podiatrist will be able to provide you with insoles, which will give added support to your feet and ankles and can often help to relieve pain in your knees and hips.
Protecting your joints; it’s important to be aware of joint protection. The muscles and soft tissues which hold your joints in place can be put under strain as you use them. Use supports for the joints if necessary and ensure that your muscles are as strong as possible.

Body beautiful; your therapists can provide equipment to help with your daily routine of washing and getting ready. An occupational therapist can give advice and provide equipment to help you be independent – for example, an aid to get in and out of the bath, if necessary.

Mobility; most young people with JIA have normal mobility. However, you may need to allow extra time to get from place to place, especially if you have to use stairs. You may need crutches to help with walking, or a wheelchair if walking distances becomes a problem. Your therapy team will advise you on what mobility aids you may need and give you tips for getting about. A wheelchair is an aid to your mobility, not a replacement for it.

Surgery; Some young people with severe arthritis will benefit from surgery when other treatments haven’t helped. However, such procedures are now much rarer due to the more effective drug therapies available.

Please note that the information on our (Arthritis Research UK) drugs pages has been written for adult use and may be different for young people. Speak to your rheumatologist for more specific information about medication and young people.

As this will be reflecting the fact that it's not just old people that have lived full lives that get arthritis but young people too that are battling with its constrictions daily, I want to make sure it has a fun and vibrant theme, not depressing but still serious and informative in parts. I will explore this more once I know for sure what I am doing.

A U D I E N C E
The audience will be the general public as it is raising awareness. But also young people with arthritis to show them they are not isolated and they are part of a community/ people understand and want to help.

DEADLINE
Start in November.

Patterns! People! Colour!

P R O D U C T
Sketchbook of work investigating into the role of colour, patterns and people in India.
Sketchbook of work investigating into the landscape and environment there.
Sketchbook of work investigating into the presence of animals in their culture such as animal deities.

T O N E   O F   V O I C E
Reportage, documenting what I see, and imaginative where appropriate.

I need to research into the area I am travelling to, it's history, culture and people. Particularly their textiles and art/creative industries e.g. ceramics/figures of worship etc.
Also I need to research into reportage artists, stick a few key images in my sketchbook (as I may not be able to access internet while I am there) and keep a Pinterest with a collection of ideas/images that inspire me.

Studio Brief 8: Run the World

UPDATE: THIS BRIEF WAS DELAYED TILL SUMMER 2016

B R I E F   T I T L E
Run the World

B R I E F
Create an illustration that celebrates the project 'Run the World', including symbols of the countries, continents, number of miles etc.

P R O D U C T
I will create a poster or small illustration that can be framed, something tactile and commemorative that he can put up somewhere/ on a desk etc. This illustration can then be used for something else if I have time, e.g. a proposed tea towel etc.

T O N E   O F   V O I C E
The tone of voice will be fun and celebratory - victorious! Acknowledging his completion of the project and raising so much money for charity.

A U D I E N C E
Audience will mainly be Dan, however it has been briefed by Julian, a friend of Dan, as a surprise for him, so it will also need to impress and fulfill his expectations for the illustration. It will probably be used in Dan's household so the audience will not be broad, however it will need to be child friendly (which will not be a problem for this particular brief) etc so that it can be around the house!

C O N T E X T
Run the World; Dan is running a 10k in every country that participates in the Olympics, spread over a couple of years, he is mid way through. My illustration must celebrate the project by including symbols of the countries, continents, number of miles etc.

A D D I T I O N A L    I N F O R M A T I O N / C O N S I D E R A T I O N S
Colour scheme.
Reference photographs of Dan.
What style would be best? Digital may look more professional... may look best a bit simpler and graphic style shape and colour based to look less like a drawn birthday card and more like an award style of illustration? May add a clean cut professional look if I use analogue processes to start off with and then editing it and perhaps adding colour using a digital programme such as Photoshop.

Can be any size, I am thinking a small A5 and then a larger one; in this case creating it digitally would definitely be more appropriate and less time consuming.

Paintings for a family friendly, festive Christmas present.

A D D I T I O N A L    I N F O R M A T I O N / C O N S I D E R A T I O N S
As it is a Christmas present I should consider wrapping and extra details to add to the festive Christmas theme, I think these small details will make the gift extra special and will add to the personalized touch of the gift. Obviously will need the client to see the paintings before she gives them as a gift so perhaps not actually wrapped but potentially a boarder around the frame using paper cut such as in the images below...

This would look weird if I was creating the paintings on canvas but she wants them on good quality thick paper so this could work. My main focus will be the paintings but once they are done I will try out this idea and see if it fits well with the piece. Also I am not sure if she would want to use her own frame or if I would provide them, I may want to buy some cheap plain white ones so that I can photograph the final pieces in a way that I want in order to document them in context.

Studio Brief 5: A.D A.D Print Collaboration

B R I E F   T I T L E
A.D.A.D. Collaboration

B R I E F
Create illustrations based on the themes of animals in folklaw. These will then be passed on to Aggie Davies, an Illustration student at Portsmouth. She will apply her working practice to these illustrations. She works in a more print based medium and is really interested in that process. I love her work and I think it will work great with my own illustrations to add depth, visual interest and atmosphere to the work.

P R O D U C T
A set of prints based on animals in folk law.

T O N E   O F   V O I C E
Yet to be confirmed. However I really like the tone of voice of the artists work I am collaborating with so it would be cool to follow in that and it would work really well with the content of our project looking at animals in folk law. Slightly disturbing/magical.

Follow this link to see some of her work...

http://adillustration.tumblr.com/post/129849656969

A U D I E N C E
Yet to be confirmed.

C O N T E X T
We will individually research and then decide together the specific characters/scenes or stories in the folk law that we want to focus on in our illustrations.

A D D I T I O N A L    I N F O R M A T I O N / C O N S I D E R A T I O N S
I will need to discuss with her the simplicity of my images and what media would be best for me to create them in as well as size and specific content of each image. Also paper must be considered seeing as it will be then used to print on. I will also have to consider how to give her the illustrations, either by face to face or by post... if by post I must ensure I use a method that wont allow for any bending or crumpling of the paper, or smudging of the illustrations etc.

Further Research into Folk Law...

Media...
I was researching for another brief where I am investigating into paper cuts and I suddenly thought that really carefully crafted papercuts like the one below would would really well with one of Aggie's atmospheric printed backgrounds and would link to our animals in folk law theme, especially as I could include text, like in the below image, that could be carefully selected/quoted from the folk law tale/myth etc. I spoke to Aggie about it and she loved the idea so I will continue to investigate this brief using this media.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/566820303080365516/

M A N D A T O R Y   R E Q U I R E M E N T S
Create a set of illustrations (yet to decide on size and amount or media) to then send to Aggie Davies for her to work on using print methods. Will need to decide on how to split them between us/what to do with them.. sell them? exhibit them? use them in a book? We may want to create at least 2 of each print in order to make two books, one for each of us.

D E L I V E R A B L E S
A) A set of illustrations (drawings most likely) to be sent on to the other artist.
B) The finished product will be a set of finished prints.

Studio Brief 4: SunD.I.Y

B R I E F   T I T L E
SunD.I.Y

B R I E F
In order to expand my use of media and 3-D materials I have set myself the task of spending 1-2 hours on a Sunday creating a small creative D.I.Y project. I will be uploading this as a blog post every Sunday onto my A Wasp in a Wig Tumblr under the page SunD.I.Y. I am not expecting the results to be perfect but the aim is more so to investigate and explore other materials and practice not being so preoccupied with perfection in my work.

P R O D U C T
The product will be a blog post with a few images of making the work and a final image of the 'finished' work at the end of the hour, and it in context, e.g. hung on a door handle etc. It will accompany a text explaining how I created it, what went wrong and how I could make it better next time and what I like about it.

My first try...

http://awaspinawig.tumblr.com/post/130507003215/first-attempt-at-sundiy-could-have-gone-better
T O N E   O F   V O I C E
The tone of voice will be fun and not too serious. I want to be experimental and carefree with this brief and not worry about how the work looks, it is all about the process of making and trying out techniques and creating 3-D products I would admire, on Pinterest for example, but never usually actually set aside the time to make myself.
I was thinking of focussing on simple designs such as Anthropologie style flower and pattern surface designs to decorate them, with perhaps a letter to symbolise someones name etc. This will be helpful to my creative practice as I want to start thinking about simple surface pattern more which will allow me to focus on the role of shape and colour in media more.

A U D I E N C E
The audience will be whoever follows my A Wasp in a Wig Tumblr blog. It will also be whoever is searching for the hashtags I will use, such as '*hashtag* DIY. I will also be sharing it on my other professional social media platforms such as my A Wasp in a Wig Instagram, Facebook and this Blogger account. I may then share these to my personal social medias- depending on how proud I am of them! But this blog page is more about giving the process a go rather than creating impressive work!

C O N T E X T
The context will differ from D.I.Y item to another. The blog post context will be on my specific page dedicated to these D.I.Y experiments, on my professional Tumblr so it will be an online context which means that I will have to dedicate some time, about 30mins-1hour editing images and writing the post. But should be pretty quick. I will provide an image on the post of the object in its contextual environment such as a D.I.Y decorated jar on a kitchen surface with some cookies in etc.

A D D I T I O N A L    I N F O R M A T I O N / C O N S I D E R A T I O N S
I may have to prepare and get hold of the materials before the Sunday so I have everything I need to make the proposed object. This means I will have to research and plan into what it is I want to create per week. I will do this by keeping a Pinterest board of all of the D.I.Y objects I see that appeal to me. I can get some materials from Leeds College of Art, for example yesterday I collected some cut offs from wood work and came home with some wood of various sizes… I'm not sure what I will do with them yet but I'm sure there will be a 'pin' about some painted wood block somewhere!

M A N D A T O R Y   R E Q U I R E M E N T S
Create a D.I.Y object/product weekly, every sunday. Only spend a maximum of two hours making the item. Then spend 30 minutes uploading a post, including images of the process, finished work, and work in context, onto my A Wasp in a Wig Tumblr. Also include a brief description as part of the post explaining the process and my favourite and worst parts of the making process and the final piece.

Studio Brief 3: Q&A Saturdays

B R I E F   T I T L E
Q&A Saturdays

B R I E F
To post on blog (Tumblr and embed to Blogger) weekly, every Saturday, a short Q&A featuring someone that has inspired me that week. No more than ten questions; best at about 5 in order to keep it short and sweet, as interviewees are more likely to answer the questions and the audience is more likely to read it. I will be providing my own illustrations for each either a portrait of the interviewee or an illustration of something that symbolises them. I will also be providing examples of their work or links.

P R O D U C T
An online resource for inspiration and a set of illustrations portraying a huge range of content, because of the difference in interviewees. There will be a consistence throughout however as all of the work will be created in a small amount of time and for the purpose of representing the individual in question, it will be quite a simple illustration in comparison to other projects.

T O N E   O F   V O I C E
The tone of voice will depend on the interviewee and what they stand for. I am assuming that I will be able to get hold of a photograph reference of their face so it should be a portrait alongside other key elements in their working life/passions. I want to use a limited colour scheme for these and lots of negative space as the background as this will create a clean and simple look to the blog post and will allow the illustration to merge with the blog background, with the text underneath.

A U D I E N C E
The audience will be anyone looking at my blog; so it will start off quite limited. I will be using hashtags so anyone searching for them will be able to find it. My blog is focussed around creativity, I find my inspiration in dance, music, performance/theatre, fashion, painting, films, adverts etc… so my interviewees will be reflective of this, and so the target audience will be quite broad as I will cover a range of disciplines. Hopefully the people I will be featuring will share it on their social media platforms so that will increase the audience. So the intended audience is broad, yet the actual audience will probably be a lot smaller depending on how successful the social media links go.

C O N T E X T
So the platform I will use will be my social media platforms; Blogger, Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook etc. These will all be through my A Wasp in a Wig pages, but I will be sharing those links on my personal Facebook etc too in order to increase audience. The blog posts will be on a separate page Q&A Saturday on my Tumblr, they will all have 5 - 10 questions, mostly following the theme of their creative practice but because each individual is different, the questions will be tailored to their specific interests, however I would like to make it interactive by embedding videos etc. I can do this by asking their favourite music videos/adverts/favourite scene from a film/childhood picture book/childhood programme aka the moomins/favourite childhood toy etc. I think this audience interaction will provide a lot more interest to the post. I also will embed or link their own work/blogs.

A D D I T I O N A L    I N F O R M A T I O N / C O N S I D E R A T I O N S
I need to utilise the creative people already around me that inspire me; peers at the college, tutors, peers from my Art and Design Foundation course at Oxford Brookes University, and other peers I know that are successful in their field such as music etc. However I also think I should push myself to contact other artists and individuals that inspire me! A quick email asking a few questions (aka five) and then perhaps asking to draw a specific photograph or just draw an already existing one found on their social media.

Could send emails to bloggers and see if they would answer 5 questions as this would provide a larger audience and they may also share on their own social media platforms.

M A N D A T O R Y   R E Q U I R E M E N T S
Ensure that this only takes a couple of hours per week. I will dedicate some time at the beginning of the week to gather the chosen information, the Q&A together on a word document and spend a couple of hours on the illustration so that it is done before friday. Then I will just keep them ready to post on the saturday morning. I will record and set myself a list of people to ask and have them lined up (with questions already asked as soon as possible) as much in advance as possible in order to keep to my weekly posts and allow for problems to happen, aka someone taking a long time to reply. It will be better to have too many Q&A's than too little.

D E L I V E R A B L E S
A weekly blog post to my Tumblr: A Wasp in a Wig blog.
This will be linked to my Q&A Saturday page.
It will include a Q&A, of 5-10 questions, to a chosen creative that has inspired me that week.
It will also include one of my own illustrations depicting the individual.
This post will be shared on my professional A Wasp in a Wig social media platforms, e.g. Instagram, Facebook, Blogger etc.

A U D I E N C E
Young, female, willing to spend money on good quality creative outfits that you would usually just wear to a festival - middle class, or just creative dressers/out there people!

C O N T E X T
Promotional products, attracting an audience and making them aware of the brand.

A D D I T I O N A L    I N F O R M A T I O N / C O N S I D E R A T I O N S
This will be good for me to get my work out there - as they will probably use them in a photo shoot etc for their own branding which will also help my own branding… I could include a wasp? Also they will feature it on their social media platforms as branding and in real life such as when they are selling at festivals.

For the designs themselves I was thinking about patterned backgrounds with white for the text/illustrations etc as they have this look in their branding already. I was also thinking that I could produce some stencils as these would also create this effect of negative space. I was thinking about using block colours or textures such as snakeskin/eyes/faces/scenes etc. could do this through collage or photoshop.

M A N D A T O R Y   R E Q U I R E M E N T S

D E L I V E R A B L E S
A range of proposed promotional material for the clothing brand Lone.Rascal
Produce some of these proposed products for example the canvas bag, leaflet/handout/beermat/ keyring/ animation etc.
(An animation would probably be quite useful as they could put it on their instagram/website/social media platforms and also once I have created it I can just send it over online, the other products will have a much larger production time once the product has been made once.)

Rationale

Create work that imbues and evokes the raw emotion that is the driving force behind the brief; do this by the combination of carefully considered colour, pattern, detail and media! E.g. Ugandan Maternal Healthcare Picture Book would be all about the raw emotion of love from caregivers to a child/newborn, family bonds and the caring healthcare workers; I will use traditional African patterns and colours and carefully consider the details such as expressions that I focus on to portray these emotions!

About my practice;
Colour,
Pattern,
Detail,
Emotion,
The natural world.

I want my portfolio to include;
Broad range of media,
Mixed media,
Visual research/experiments,
Colour palettes,
Work finished to a professional standard,
Simple/symbolism,
Good drawing ability.

Brief 5:
ADAD Analogue Print Collaboration
Deadline

Rationale:

Create illustrations based on the themes of animals in folk law.
Yet to be confirmed. However I really like the tone of voice of the artist’s work I am collaborating with so it would be cool to follow in that and it would work really well with the content of our project looking at animals in folk law. Slightly disturbing/magical.

Studio Brief 10:
Arthritis (JIA and other illnesses that Arthritis Research UK fund research for) Awareness Campaign.
Yet to be made specific. In order to do this I will have to talk to people campaigning/working for this cause already and find out what my illustrations can do to help most effectively. Be it an animation, a character design e.g. in wheelchairs etc, posters or canvas bags to raise money etc. I will also contact people dealing with it such as the communities on social media platforms like Instagram. How do charities such as Arthritis Research UK fund research that affects young people… YOUNG PEOPLE ORIENTATED.
