Houlder Christmas Couple Portraits!

In my previous blog post I mentioned using paper cut outs to add a festive trim around the border... I decided against this as even though the portraits are for Christmas they are supposed to be an addition for the house year round so it was unnecessary to go to that extra effort. I think it may have also looked ridiculous as the reference images I was given to work from were based in the summer on a boat!

First I drew basic pencil lines mapping out the piece on the A3 card. But after a few attempts of getting scale right, the pencil was just not working for me! I decided instead to just work straight into the piece in acrylic paint. This was definitely the better option for me!

I actually love just going straight into a piece of work with paint, and I loved layering colours and lines in the piece, it all seems to add up and then the right proportions and scale just comes together while I create the work as I am always adapting and changing the painting in order for it to make sense to the original image.

If I had more change I would have experimented with colour schemes and different paint techniques more, I would have also probably prefered to have done it on canvas but the client requested colours accurate to the image and for the work to be on card; and she was happy with the final result so I am happy!!
