Studio Brief 4: SunD.I.Y

SunD.I.Y

B R I E F
In order to expand my use of media and 3-D materials I have set myself the task of spending 1-2 hours on a Sunday creating a small creative D.I.Y project. I will be uploading this as a blog post every Sunday onto my A Wasp in a Wig Tumblr under the page SunD.I.Y. I am not expecting the results to be perfect but the aim is more so to investigate and explore other materials and practice not being so preoccupied with perfection in my work.

The product will be a blog post with a few images of making the work and a final image of the 'finished' work at the end of the hour, and it in context, e.g. hung on a door handle etc. It will accompany a text explaining how I created it, what went wrong and how I could make it better next time and what I like about it.

My first try...

The tone of voice will be fun and not too serious. I want to be experimental and carefree with this brief and not worry about how the work looks, it is all about the process of making and trying out techniques and creating 3-D products I would admire, on Pinterest for example, but never usually actually set aside the time to make myself.
I was thinking of focussing on simple designs such as Anthropologie style flower and pattern surface designs to decorate them, with perhaps a letter to symbolise someones name etc. This will be helpful to my creative practice as I want to start thinking about simple surface pattern more which will allow me to focus on the role of shape and colour in media more.

The audience will be whoever follows my A Wasp in a Wig Tumblr blog. It will also be whoever is searching for the hashtags I will use, such as '*hashtag* DIY. I will also be sharing it on my other professional social media platforms such as my A Wasp in a Wig Instagram, Facebook and this Blogger account. I may then share these to my personal social medias- depending on how proud I am of them! But this blog page is more about giving the process a go rather than creating impressive work!

The context will differ from D.I.Y item to another. The blog post context will be on my specific page dedicated to these D.I.Y experiments, on my professional Tumblr so it will be an online context which means that I will have to dedicate some time, about 30mins-1hour editing images and writing the post. But should be pretty quick. I will provide an image on the post of the object in its contextual environment such as a D.I.Y decorated jar on a kitchen surface with some cookies in etc.

I may have to prepare and get hold of the materials before the Sunday so I have everything I need to make the proposed object. This means I will have to research and plan into what it is I want to create per week. I will do this by keeping a Pinterest board of all of the D.I.Y objects I see that appeal to me. I can get some materials from Leeds College of Art, for example yesterday I collected some cut offs from wood work and came home with some wood of various sizes… I'm not sure what I will do with them yet but I'm sure there will be a 'pin' about some painted wood block somewhere!

Create a D.I.Y object/product weekly, every sunday. Only spend a maximum of two hours making the item. Then spend 30 minutes uploading a post, including images of the process, finished work, and work in context, onto my A Wasp in a Wig Tumblr. Also include a brief description as part of the post explaining the process and my favourite and worst parts of the making process and the final piece.
