Vagina Dentata Digital Illustrations Update!

Here are a few progress shots of my Vagina Dentata illustrations so far on Photoshop.

I have used this program to add colour to the images using Layers and the Paint Brush Tool. The illustrations are in CMYK mode as they are made for print in a magazine, however I will probably create some that are also of RGB mode if the client wants to use them for an online means such as social media.

For this illustration I have used the colour scheme of pastel colours; blues, yellows and pinks. I did this to imbue a sci-fi and feminine feel to the work- powerful and female. I also thought these colours were very prevalent in the mood boards I made based on the Vagina Dentata instagram account showing their inspirations. I have quite a lot still to do for this illustration but I think I have made a good start on planning the base tone and feel of the illustration.

This illustration has also had the base colours added. It is using a darker colour scheme because there is already quite a lot of white/negative space visible in the outfit. I will be making the smoke more space-like and adding more deatails to the skin, face and hair. I will also be adding some more elements to the gun and dress although I am not sure how sketchy to keep those parts yet.

This illustration is using turquoise and purple as a colour scheme. I had quite a lot of problems finding vibrant colours, which I wanted for the sci-fi theme, to work in the CMYK mode. But I found these colours and I think they work well to compliment each other and the effect of the illustration. Keeping negative space in mind, a lot of the flag and outfit will keep the colour white as well as the background.

An example of colour blocking the base colours before I had adjusted the percentage of opacity for the layer.

For this illustration I have used a range of colours; blue, green and orange, but I hope to keep it at that. Providing negative space in the white background to try to balance out the colourful content. I have kept a pastel colour scheme to connect with the sci-fi theme of the work. I cant wait to get working on this, once details such as the fur on the cat are finished the work will come to life.
