OUIL503: Scavi & Ray Collaboration

Artists:

Media and content ideas:
Here are some experiments with format and patterns; I tried to incorporate imagery that links to the companies themes for the alcohol; fun and girly so I included flowers and also cocktail accessories such as lemons and strawberries. For this I used pen however we are aiming to use a watercolour technique:

Below I was looking at recent fashion weeks and some of the models and guests attending, I tried to incorporate the alcohol into the image however this was just quick sketches so they do not look very realistic. Also this is not the aesthetic we are looking for and I think it is crucial we make a big part of the image the bottle itself so I will continue to explore this and try to combine the fun loving girls with the bottle in one working image. I will also do this in watercolour to get an idea on how this will work together.

Colour Scheme: Black and white (like Scavi and Ray's logo etc) navy and red: A common colour palette used in recent issues of Vogue:

Thinking about how to incorporate the alcohol into the image while still being girly, flirty and fun etc: some of my previous work for Absolut Vodka: this was using pen though - for this current project we are looking at a watercolour direction:

OUIL503: Matt Album Cover and Dads

Dads image:

"Regarding the music stuff it wasn't an album cover but just a piece of art to use to promote a song

its about biological fathers being replaced by some kind of non biological agents by a dystopian socialist gvt

so I was thinking some kind of split page with normal fathers on one side who drink beers and play baseball with their kids and then some robofathers on the other side who are just like weird

and then doing it first in b&w, scan it, colour then scan again, which would let me do an animation effect on it to fade colour into each side like a pendulum effect for the youtube video."

Album Cover:

"Do you know magritte's ce nest pas un pipe

anyways i basically would like to have a pipe drawn but kinda in that style mixed with a kinda watercolour style and not from the side but from the top.. if that makes sense.
I want it to be quite 1930s in style"

This brief did not continue as there were problems over payment; however still sounds a really fun project were I to have more time and money.

STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal

Project Rationale

What are you proposing to do? (Product, Range & Distribution)

·         I plan to create a finished surface pattern (or multiple) that is professionally finished and neatly designed and thought through.
·         A finished make up bag, supporting the ‘lipstick’ feminism movement, that is thoroughly sewn and executed so that it is secure and working.
·         Create a proposal for a range of products and packaging using this surface pattern.
·         Put care and thought into combining the various elements and subjects within my concept and themes.
·         Ensure that the colour palette and atmosphere of the surface pattern design reflects female empowerment (along with the other aims of third-wave feminism, e.g. LGBT rights).
·         Plan: carefully plan and organize when to explore concepts and media in visual journal; when to start planning out a final (or multiple) surface patterns; experimenting with how this would best work on my proposed products, particularly the makeup bag; when to start actually making the final product.
·         Continued blogging recording work, analysis and evaluation, ideas and potential direction, artist influences, other products in this field and relevant feminists.
·         I am also considering creating a pencil case if time constraints allow as I think this is also relevant to the theme of female empowerment as it investigates the importance of female education.

What do you want achieve?

·         Communicate the aims and messages of third wave feminism to girls and women in todays society. Important to enforce the message of female empowerment and open mindedness; having ‘choice’ whether it’s wearing makeup, being LGBT, taking the pill etc.
·         A product in which the material and design reflect the overall purpose/message of the project.

What do you want learn from doing it?

·         Knowledge in making a tactile garment/product. Putting action into the proposal! This will mean learning techniques and methods such as sewing, collaging material/patchwork, applique, painting/inking onto material.
·         Knowledge into the uses of different materials and how this will effect your product; stiff/elastic, using zips etc.
·         I want to learn more about thirdwave/lipstick feminism. Also the key and influential feminists in the past and present.
·         Realistic ambitions when making a product under a time restraint. It will be a good learning experience to attempt to create this product however this may cause me limitations in the quality of the product. Quality is key in this range so hopefully I will be able to create one finished product at least.
·         It will also teach me the issues when using my chosen processes, for example using the sewing machine I may create something unfixable or wreck the fabric. When cutting the fabric I may cut out the wrong parts or to the wrong shape and I may sew the material inside out or to the wrong edges. My final result may not be what I expected however hopefully with these easy mistakes on the forefront of my mind I will be able to avoid most mishaps.

THEMES / SUBJECTS
What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice
GENERAL THEMES:
·         Feminism: third wave/lipstick
·         Choice
·         Flowers
·         Anatomy
·         Power (womens)
·         LGBT rights (the beauty in any love/embrace)
·         Patterns

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS:

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION
What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs.
SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA:
·         Product and Packaging

AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS:
·         Those buying the products for themselves.
·         Those buying the products for friends or relatives as a present.
·         It will be mainly girls and women however also could be for men who use makeup or the other products.
·         Above all they will look girly and feminine; this will attract a certain type of buyer. Then when they start to look closer they will see the imagery; this will reflect the views of third wave feminism so will empower these women drawn to the product by the pretty pattern and colours.
·         This product will be used daily – an investment rather than a one off novelty.

PRODUCTION / Distribution Methods:
·         It will be hand crafted however I may need to print or screen print the surface pattern design onto the fabric. This will depend on what media I want to use; if I choose to hand ink/paint onto the material I may not need to screen print. I will only be creating one or a small amount of the product however in my proposed range the production would be a work force of makers and going to high end retailers for unique designs (every product would be slightly different – different part of the surface pattern design/paint/material used) such as Liberties, Harvey Nichols, Harrods, Selfridges, Anthropologie etc.
·         This product will be an investment; used daily and admired rather than a one off throw away novelty.
·         The 3-D aspect/material will add a tactile selling point as well as having a use; it will feel nice/pretty.

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES
Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioner’s and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution.
ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS:
·         Artist’s and designers that use material to make art and draw with stitches.
·         William Morris
·         Tracy Emin
·         Germaine Greer
·         Beyonce
·         Nicki Minaj
·         Lily Allen
·         Sports ad- This Girl Can?
·         Julie Vermeille
·         Debbie Smyth
·         Marta Mattsson
·         Georgie Meadows
·         Caroline Kirton
·         Sandeep Jandu
·         Catherine Green
·         Emily Jo Gibbs
·         Briona Daniels
·         Cos Ahmet

CREATIVE SKILLS
What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.
·         Sketchbook/visual journal: I will explore how to practically/visually explore concepts such as third wave feminism, and being ‘girly’ etc. I will do this partially by exploring ‘girly’ colour palettes, patterns, flowers and other imagery; combining this with motifs of power and womanhood/anatomy, and LBGT rights as well as including quotes and key words to the movement (feminism). It sounds a lot going on however I want it to be full of images and patterns tying them all together; it will be a struggle I will take on to create something beautiful out of this mass of imagery and pattern.
·         I will experiment and further develop my practical skills in sewing; hand stitching and using a sewing machine. I plan to do a sewing machine workshop as it has been a while since I last used one and I have never used one in which the material is movable freehand so using this technique should be really beneficial to my project as I plan on drawing through thread.
·         I also intend to further develop my practical skills in font knowledge and creation. I have vary limited knowledge at the moment on this element of graphic design however I intend on talking to some students on the graphic design course to get ideas on which fonts would have the most impact in relation to my designs. I want to use juxtaposing fonts to the content; for this I will need to collate my feminist quotes and key words, first.

KEY TEXTS.
List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications.

You should include a list of relevant websites

·         Germaine Greer
·         Little Women?
·         Barbara Kruger
·         Bell Hooks
·         Lynne Segal
·         Womans hour bbc radio 4
·         Girl Power
·         Spice Girls
·         The Ultimate Guide to Art Quilting
·         Botany for the Artist
·         Anatomy for the Artist
·         Everyday Sexism Project – Laura Bates.
·         Nicki Minaj/Beyonce interviews and documentaries and other influential females.
·         Guerrilla Girls

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
·         Social/cultural impact: hopefully I’ll be able to convey a positive message as this is how I interpret third-wave feminism, however there will always be backlash/opponents for example some other feminists/masogynists/homophobics.
·         Technological concerns: using a sewing machine – could easily go wrong and the material and time may be limited.
·         Some of the content may be offensive such as some of the images of anatomy used or two men kissing.- This may mean the work should be targeted at an older audience however I don’t think there is any reason to hide these elements from younger people?
