Ugandan Maternal Healthcare Adjustments.

My feedback from the Uganda Maternal Healthcare illustrations. I have a few adjustments to make this week...

'Thank you so much for this great work. am in love with them already. just a few suggestions. is it possible to increase the visibility of pregnancy in Alice's work that is, make the tummy more protruding. and also make the garden green in the scene where the woman is feeling dizzy while digging. another edit is to improve the visibility of the blood patch on the woman's dress while she is in the market may be she can wear another white dress where the patch can come out well. otherwise its tremendous work. really great. and can Eleanor make the pregnancy visible too? wow, the work is great. cant stop looking. thank you people soooo much.'

IMPROVEMENTS

I did these improvements for her and sent them off, however I actually was really unhappy with the visuals, particularly the backgrounds, of the illustrations. I decided to take a bit of time to try and adjust them slightly to fix this issue for myself. I didn't like the smoothness and faded nature of the background - it wasn't how I create work usually, and it didn't seem to reflect the culture nor the art of Africa.

I decided to add some brighter, bolder colours and some more textured brushes to the backgrounds. This really helped me to be happy with my final resolutions. This reminds me how important analogue techniques (even if rendered digitally with brush tools) and colour is to my work!

Uganda Maternal Healthcare Project

After a meeting with Ben I made a decision not to do all of the illustrations that they gave me to do for the project. This would have taken months and would be far too time consuming and all encompassing than would be appropriate for just one of my Extended Practice module briefs. If I were to carry out the entirety of the project, doing illustrations for the multiple chapters, it would be much better suited for my Final Major Project. So instead I contacted the client and they had no problem with me just doing the first chapter. From this experience from taking on too much work I learnt a valuable lesson in being realistic with the amount I can do and not promising too much to the client if its just not feasible.
Beneath is a link to my progress shots and final images of my illustrations for the first chapter of the book. Overall I am pleased with this project as I worked hard in order to get them all done and sent off in a strict time schedule, for before I left to India. I am also really happy with how I managed to convey the scene to the way that was described to me in the paragraphs I got sent by the client. This was really good as it made me think about all the different components in the image and how they all worked together in the layout and composition of the image, which is something I need to work on.

Unfortunately I am not that pleased with the final aesthetic of the image which I put down to the fact that I didnt use enough textures and work them into the image enough. I don't like the pencil drawings with a strong contrast to the smooth colour backgrounds. I think it just looks wrong. However I am really proud of how I made the main character and worked in my own patterned painting for the pattern of her dress as a layer in Photoshop. Although this was quite a simple thing to do on Photoshop it is not something I have ever concentrated on much before so I am really happy that I did it as I think the addition of texture to Photoshop work makes a huge difference!

A baby sits in the tiled land playing in it.
2. FOOD AVERSIONS

3. FATIGUE
A woman is seated bent on a chair. Her limbs are swaying without any sign of motion. (I would like an artists’ input on this because I cannot fully explain how to display fatigue.)
4. CONSTIPATION
A woman squatting on a pit latrine, its constructed from mud and is grass thatched, the door is open. Her face is frowned in pain. Her arms are folded in fists and a sweat can be seen dripping on the side of her face.  It is clear that she is having constipation.

A woman is going to be drawn having different breast sizes. The breast sizes will be enlarging as she progresses through the nine months. The smallest will be in the first month and the biggest depicted in the ninth month.
6. VOMITING
A woman can be seen outside in the corner of a house vomiting uncontrollably. The clothes are still flying in motion because of the speed she used to rush out of the house. An elderly woman can be seen standing smiling in the door way at the young woman doing all the vomiting. Scenery includes flowers and grass in the compound, smoke coming out of the kitchen which is distant.
7. BLEEDING
A woman can be seen wearing clothes stained with blood. She is walking through the market while looking behind on her stained dress around the buttock with confusion on her face. One of her arms is stretching the dress for a clearer look while the other holds a bag with some groceries hanging out. People like women and men on their market stalls are seen continuing with their business. One of the women selling tomatoes looks at her while her neighbor selling cabbage attends to a customer. Other people can be seen faintly in the background.
8. INCREASED URINATION
A woman can be seen entering a pit latrine but with the word urinal multiple times. The same picture will be repeated four times but each having a clock showing intervals of 20 minutes. If the first clock is to show 12:15, the image that flows will be having 12:35, followed by 12:55 and so on. She can be seen rushing to the toilet with one of her hands holding her private parts as if trying to stop the urine from coming through. The clothes are swaying in the air as she rushes. The scenery is made up of trees and grass but with a clear path to the urinal.

Uganda Maternal Healthcare Picture Book Illustration Project: Update

I am really happy as I received some great news from Olivia who is working on the Uganda Maternal Healthcare project. She has asked me to work alongside two other artists on this project and she will be sending me the sections that I need to cover.

'Carol was really pleased with all the samples you sent over and is really keen for you to illustrate her book!

She has written up descriptions of each illustration that needs doing for the first half of the book (the 'during pregnancy' section). I've divided up the months between the three of you.

Some of the pictures are a bit more complicated than the ones you did for the samples. Hopefully this won't be a major problem, but if you want to simplify them a bit that should be fine as long as the main message is still quite obvious. If you're really struggling with any of them let me know and maybe someone else can have a go. I've also attached all the samples you did so that you can have a look at each others. The styles are relatively similar, but it doesn't matter too much if the pictures aren't all identical!

We thought it would be a good idea to try and make the main woman the same character throughout, and the easiest way to do this is probably if she is wearing the same colour. I think red and orange would make her stand out as the main character?

There are quite a lot of pictures and of course I'm sure you are all quite busy, but if you could give me an idea of how long you think it will take to do your illustrations that would be really helpful!

Thanks all so much for getting involved in this project and really looking forward to seeing your work. Please let me know if you have any questions at all, or if any of the descriptions are unclear.'

She also sent along attachments concerning the project.

These are some of the sample illustrations I sent over to her. I wanted to give an example of black and white and combining some colour etc.
