Statement of Intent

Name

Alice Dear
Blog Address
Date

Rationale

Create work that imbues and evokes the raw emotion that is the driving force behind the brief; do this by the combination of carefully considered colour, pattern, detail and media! E.g. Ugandan Maternal Healthcare Picture Book would be all about the raw emotion of love from caregivers to a child/newborn, family bonds and the caring healthcare workers; I will use traditional African patterns and colours and carefully consider the details such as expressions that I focus on to portray these emotions!

About my practice;
Colour,
Pattern,
Detail,
Emotion,
The natural world.

I want my portfolio to include;
Broad range of media,
Mixed media,
Visual research/experiments,
Colour palettes,
Work finished to a professional standard,
Simple/symbolism,
Good drawing ability.

Themes / Subjects

Themes in my work…
Colour, pattern, people, creativity, culture, biology, emotion, psychology.

Subjects in my work…
Promotion, branding, reportage, human relationships e.g. parent and child, culture e.g. Africa, festival culture etc, fashion.

To produce;
Promotional material – canvas bags/leaflets/stickers/posters (L.R)
Editorial material – picture book/magazine/editorial illustrations (Uganda maternal/VD mag)
Analogue prints – (ADAD Collab)
Range of 3D products (SUND.I.Y)

Evaluating
Organisation – Fail to prepare, prepare to fail! / Arriving early!

Brief 1:

Deadline

Rationale:

Brief 2:
Lone.Rascal Promo Products

Deadline

Rationale:

Produce promotional material for the Lone.Rascal clothing brand.
This should include a design that interacts with the logo/name of brand that can be used on a canvas bag, leaflet, sticker etc could propose some ideas, such as a fun fluffy keyring etc but should definitely produce the canvas bag! Fun, free spirited, festival vibe, boho, hippy, emotion, happy, creative, colourful, vibrant, young, retro, musical!

Brief 3:
Q&A Saturdays

Deadline

Rationale:

To post on blog (Tumblr and embed to Blogger) weekly, every Saturday, a short Q&A featuring someone that has inspired me that week.
Mostly no more than ten questions; best at about 5 key questions in order to keep it short and sweet, as interviewees are more likely to answer the questions and the audience is more likely to read it. I will be providing my own illustrations for each either a portrait of the interviewee or an illustration of something that symbolises them. I will also be providing examples of their work or links.
The tone of voice will depend on the interviewee and what they stand for. I am assuming that I will be able to get hold of a photograph reference of their face so it should be a portrait alongside other key elements in their working life/passions. I want to use a limited colour scheme for these and lots of negative space as the background as this will create a clean and simple look to the blog post and will allow the illustration to merge with the blog background, with the text underneath.

Brief 4:
SunD.I.Y

Deadline

Rationale:

In order to expand my use of media and 3-D materials I have set myself the task of spending 1-2 hours on a Sunday creating a small creative D.I.Y project. I will be uploading this as a blog post every Sunday onto my A Wasp in a Wig Tumblr under the page SunD.I.Y. I am not expecting the results to be perfect but the aim is more so to investigate and explore other materials and practice not being so preoccupied with perfection in my work.

The tone of voice will be fun and not too serious. I want to be experimental and carefree with this brief and not worry about how the work looks, it is all about the process of making and trying out techniques and creating 3-D products I would admire, on Pinterest for example, but never usually actually set aside the time to make myself.
I was thinking of focussing on simple designs such as Anthropologie style flower and pattern surface designs to decorate them, with perhaps a letter to symbolise someones name etc. This will be helpful to my creative practice as I want to start thinking about simple surface pattern more which will allow me to focus on the role of shape and colour in media more.

Brief 5:
ADAD Analogue Print Collaboration
Deadline

Rationale:

Create illustrations based on the themes of animals in folk law. These will then be passed on to Aggie Davies, an Illustration student at Portsmouth. She will apply her working practice to these illustrations. She works in a more print based medium and is really interested in that process. I love her work and I think it will work great with my own illustrations to add depth, visual interest and atmosphere to the work.
Yet to be confirmed. However I really like the tone of voice of the artist’s work I am collaborating with so it would be cool to follow in that and it would work really well with the content of our project looking at animals in folk law. Slightly disturbing/magical.

Additional Project Proposals

Vagina Dentata Magazine Editorial Illustration
To draw a couple of well known Sci-Fi characters. More details yet to be confirmed.

Studio Brief 7:
The Houlder's Christmas Portraits
Deadline: Christmas

Studio Brief 9:
India Brief

Patterns! People! Colour!
Sketchbook of work investigating into the role of colour, patterns and people in India.
Sketchbook of work investigating into the landscape and environment there.
Sketchbook of work investigating into the presence of animals in their culture such as animal deities.

Studio Brief 10:
Arthritis (JIA and other illnesses that Arthritis Research UK fund research for) Awareness Campaign.
Yet to be made specific. In order to do this I will have to talk to people campaigning/working for this cause already and find out what my illustrations can do to help most effectively. Be it an animation, a character design e.g. in wheelchairs etc, posters or canvas bags to raise money etc. I will also contact people dealing with it such as the communities on social media platforms like Instagram. How do charities such as Arthritis Research UK fund research that affects young people… YOUNG PEOPLE ORIENTATED.

Studio Brief 11:
Featherhead People Promotional Material
This brief is purely if I have time, a very short brief I can just do a few illustrations! Can do this after Christmas.

Studio Brief 12:

Studio Brief 10: Arthritis Awareness Campaign, no rush to do a lot of work for this, if I have any ideas I can do a bit but mainly to focus on over Christmas!
May ’16?

Overarching Rationale

I want to…
Create work full of emotion.
Create work that uses a colour palette, pattern and media,
(and details where appropriate as well as carefully thought out use of negative space),
specifically and selectively to convey the message of the piece
-from the client to the target audience

Because…
This will give context to my work.
It will help to target my working practice to the brief and client
so that my work is as professional as possible,
but still full of my passions/key themes in my work;

C O L O U R
P A T T E R N
E M O T I O N
D E T A I L
N A T U R E

(In my opinion this^ includes people and animals - basically the opposite of technology/sci-fi)

This will…
Create a portfolio that has a concurrent theme of work;
reflecting my passions and key themes
Create a portfolio full of experimentation throughout,
yet still clearly specific and targeted to my briefs;
client and audience.

And as a result…
Clients will be able to see the type of work I create as a practitioner,
and how I can tailor my work,
keeping my tone of voice,
to be specific to their brief and intent.

Themes in my work…
Colour, pattern, people, creativity, culture, biology, psychology

Subjects in my work…
Promotion, branding, reportage, human relationships, Africa, fashion

August Art for Arthritis Research UK Project: Continued

I really enjoyed raising money for this charity over summer and it is definitely a commitment I will keep in mind for future projects. This project is documented on my Personal and Professional Practice blog:

http://a-dear1316ppp.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/AugustArtforArthritis

... and also on my A Wasp in a Wig Tumblr on the page entitled August Art for Arthritis Project:

I was listening to a podcast from BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour and they had Jaqueline Wilson as guest editor, one of my favorite authors when I was younger, and she was talking about her new book out; Katy. Randomly enough it is based on Nicola Miles-Wildin's experiences of chronic illness with JIA, juvenile arthritis thats onset occurs before the age of 16, and her experiences using a wheelchair growing up and day to day life etc. I found this really cool as I had been thinking about how little disability is represented in arts and in character design etc, so I am so happy that Jaqueline Wilson is continuing to write books for young people to relate to and learn and understand more about other people different from them!

In the podcast Nicola talks about how people still will speak to her helper instead of her, even when she is the one checking into the hotel etc, just an idea: doing a short couple of second long animation really simple, where there is just someone speaking to the helper (perhaps above shot) and the wheelchair user is in shot just sat there left out. It doesn't matter what they are saying... just the left out and ignored feeling. Then perhaps someone comes into shot, or a child, and starts speaking to the person in the wheelchair, and suddenly the scene starts coming to life, into colour, the flowers bloom, birds sing and the sun comes out etc... symbolising how much difference the small things can make!

It is something that will influence my future projects I suspect and I will be keeping the topic in mind when thinking for new projects to take up as part of this extended practice module!

SunD.I.Y

So as part of a weekly project I have decided to create a page on my Tumblr blog called SunD.I.Y

This page will be updated weekly (on a Sunday) with quick D.I.Y arts and crafts projects. I have decided to dedicate an hour every Sunday to this as I think my practice is really 2-D and I often stick to the same media... this project will force me to be more experimental and stick to a strict time schedule. Uploading it to my blog will ensure I feel enough pressure to do it weekly however as it is only taking up an hour of my time on a Sunday it is also just a really fun and relaxed way to get experimental and hands on with my creative practice!

I have decided to also keep a Pinterest board alongside the project in order to research and record inspiration and ideas.

India Brief: Hindu Ideas of Creation

In this BBC Radio 4 program they cover the Hindu religions ideas of creation which is something I wanted to research into as part of my India Brief for my time there next month. I want to look into how animals are embedded in their culture and religion as part of my COP3 research but also to investigate and document my experience there through reportage illustration and I think it is essential to get as much of a basic knowledge of the people/area as possible before I go!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03k289f

Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss Hindu ideas about Creation. According to most Western religious traditions, a deity was the original creator of the Universe. Hinduism, on the other hand, has no single creation story. For thousands of years, Hindu thinkers have taken a variety of approaches to the question of where we come from, with some making the case for divine intervention and others asking whether it is even possible for humans to comprehend the nature of creation. The origin of our existence, and the nature of the Universe we live in, is one of the richest strands of Hindu thought.

REFLECTIONS ON ARCHETYPAL IMAGES

TASCHEN

The EGG

'The Indian image of a cosmic egg goes back to the Vedas. Brahmanda, the egg of Brahma the Creator, contains the phenomenal world. Hiranyagarbha is the golden womb, germ or embryo, luminous incubator. The egg's shell bifurcates, like two bowls, into earth and sky; the yolk is the sun. It is a primal scene: an ovum in a sea of sperm; the daily birth of the sun out of eastern waters massaged by wind; breath/spirit moving with the waters of life,, and light emerging, making form visible; the opening of an eye.'

Ganesha

'A study in contradictions and conjunctions, as the large elephant's head on his pot-bellied childish body instantly makes clear. There are, says Paul Courtright, "more than seventy myths" (p.20) of his origins and history, which, in the Indian way, include many contradictions, but the conjunction of animal and human, of wise, mature, elephant head and dwarf or toddler's human stockiness in eleventh-century reliefs are characteristic. Bells on his feet indicate that he is a dancer. His vehicle is the rat.
In one common myth of Ganesha's origins, he is the offspring of Shiva and Parvati, but in an unusual way. Shiva, the powerful deity of both destruction and restoration, the ascetic and yet also actively erotic god whose consort is Parvati, has refused to give her the son she desires. When he is absent in ascetic retreat, Parvati makes her own son from the dirt of the earth rubbed off her body, and loves him passionately, for he is solely hers. As the boy grows up, she appoints him guardian of her private and sacred bath, and instructs him to keep out all visitors. When Shiva suddenly returns and desires to join his consort, Ganesha opposes him, angering him until in fury he beheads the youth with his sword. Parvati is so distressed that Shiva is compelled to seek the first head he can find to restore the youth to life, and thus Ganesha owes the elephant half of his being to Shiva. But his human body is so young he is no sexual threat, despite Parvati's ambiguous attraction to him; suggested in many sculptures both by the curved rather than erect shape of his elephant trunk and by the broken left tusk whose end the figure holds.

Uganda Maternal Health Project: Allocated Chapters

FIRST MONTH- Alice

1. DIZZINESS
A woman standing in the garden holding a hoe with circles showing dizziness around her head. Her eyes are squinted, her hand on the head and the other holding the hoe.  Two older women can be seen in the background one digging and the other collecting grass. A baby sits in the tiled land playing in it.
2. FOOD AVERSIONS
A woman sitting on a mat with her face frowned while looking at a plate of food she has been offered by another woman. A group of three people can be seen seated nearby happily eating the same food.
3. FATIGUE
A woman is seated bent on a chair. Her limbs are swaying without any sign of motion. (I would like an artists’ input on this because I cannot fully explain how to display fatigue.)
4. CONSTIPATION
A woman squatting on a pit latrine, its constructed from mud and is grass thatched, the door is open. Her face is frowned in pain. Her arms are folded in fists and a sweat can be seen dripping on the side of her face.  It is clear that she is having constipation.

6. VOMITING
A woman can be seen outside in the corner of a house vomiting uncontrollably. The clothes are still flying in motion because of the speed she used to rush out of the house. An elderly woman can be seen standing smiling in the door way at the young woman doing all the vomiting. Scenery includes flowers and grass in the compound, smoke coming out of the kitchen which is distant.
7. BLEEDING
A woman can be seen wearing clothes stained with blood. She is walking through the market while looking behind on her stained dress around the buttock with confusion on her face. One of her arms is stretching the dress for a clearer look while the other holds a bag with some groceries hanging out. People like women and men on their market stalls are seen continuing with their business. One of the women selling tomatoes looks at her while her neighbor selling cabbage attends to a customer. Other people can be seen faintly in the background.
8. INCREASED URINATION
A woman can be seen entering a pit latrine but with the word urinal multiple times. The same picture will be repeated four times but each having a clock showing intervals of 20 minutes. If the first clock is to show 12:15, the image that flows will be having 12:35, followed by 12:55 and so on. She can be seen rushing to the toilet with one of her hands holding her private parts as if trying to stop the urine from coming through. The clothes are swaying in the air as she rushes. The scenery is made up of trees and grass but with a clear path to the urinal.
